International Day of Yoga History
International Day of Yoga is observed around the world on June 21st, Summer Solstice, the longest day of year in the Northern Hemisphere. The idea of International Yoga Day was first proposed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 27, 2014. A resolution to establish June 21st as International Yoga Day was introduced by India’s Ambassador, Asoke Kumar Mukerji. This year, the theme for International Yoga Day is “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,” which translates to “The world is one family.”
What is Yoga?
Yoga originated 5,000 years ago in India. Yoga was developed to connect the mind, body and soul so as to move toward enlightenment. An ancient Indian tradition, yoga is one of the best ways to boost physical and mental well-being. The Bhagavad Gita says that “Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.”

How can you celebrate?
You can celebrate International Yoga Day any number of ways. Yoga is available to all people in all bodies. You don’t even need any equipment. See the list below for some ideas.
1. Find International Yoga Day Events
Whether you head to a yoga class, roll out the mat (or a blanket or a towel) on your living room floor or head outside on the grass, practicing the physical activity of yoga (asana) is a great way to observe International Yoga Day. Yoga can help to build strength, improve balance and reduce stress.
2. Brush up on your breathing exercises.
Like the song says – just breathe. While breathing is an automatic function of the body, we can control it by elongating our inhales and exhales. Whether you prefer Ujjayi, Dirga, Nadi Shodhana or simply taking deep breaths, spending time with your breath helps to reduce stress, lower blood pressure and increase feelings of wellbeing, as well as a multitude of other benefits.
3. Volunteer
Ethics is the moral code that guides our choices and behaviors. Practice being more kind, accepting, and forgiving of yourself and others. Find a place to donate or volunteer your time. Read an article or book that will help you stay focused on your path. Yoga has a deep history. Maybe doing a deeper dive for a better understanding.
4. Finding Some Time to Take Care of You
Be nice to yourself. That may be something as simple as noticing your negative self-talk and reframing it into a kind compliment. Or having a meal that serves your body and mind.
5. Concentrate and Meditate
You can find all kinds of guided meditation online. Yogi Bryan is one of my favorites (Language alert! Adult content!) Or sit in your own thoughts for a bit. Meditation can help decrease stress and increase concentration. There is no wrong way to meditate!
6. Take Stock Of Your Interactions
Refrain from participating in gossip or negative remarks (about yourself or others). Become aware of how you move around in the world and step away when you notice that you’re participating in something that detracts from your inner peace.
I am celebrating too!
I started my day with a meditation and a yoga class. Later, I will teach a class; sharing yoga with others. Additionally, I will work on giving grace to myself, as well as to those around me. How are you celebrating? Please share you International Yoga Day thoughts with me on social media.
